Bag a bargain

Edinburgh's traders have spotted a way to save money and the environment. A £2500 grant from Edinburgh council means that Sciennes and Marchmont businesses will have cotton bags for their shoppers to use. An apple and a flower are the designs for the bags, designed by a Gwen Morris, a local pupil at James Gillespie school.

Supermarkets appear to be the biggest producer of plastic bags, with an estimated 1 billion free bags given away each year in Scotland, of which 80% are thrown away after just one use.

Marchmont and Sciennes join Leith in breaking away from the Edinburgh plastic bag. Greener Leith, back in 2006/7 released its own fabric bags, 2600 of them, to encourage local shoppers to think carefully about how they shop. One of the stunning facts that Greener Leith reveal is that a whale washed up in France was found to have 800kg of packaged waste in its digestive system.

Do you know of anyone other Edinburgh businesses who're giving up the humble plastic bag? Or anyone who's taking positive action to clean up Edinburgh of these nasty plastys?
