Bus Becomes Superhero

Edinburgh Coach Lines has agreed to run a temporary bus service to replace the axed no. 60 that Lothian Buses run from Dumbiedykes to Bristo Square. The initial service will only run over winter 2008 and will be reviewed by the company.

Gary Forbes-Burns, traffic manager for Edinburgh Coach Lines, said: "If the service does prove a success then we will look at it again for the summer but we are under no illusions it will be a challenge."

Edinburgh Council Subsidy Saved Too?

This saves Edinburgh Council from subsidising the allegedly underused and unprofitable route.

But if most of the users are students and OAPs, though the subsidy is indirect, concessionary fares and passes will ultimately mean the route is partly paid for by taxpayers.

Plus, one rumour is that Lothian Buses were funded to buy another bus explicitly for this route in the last year. Will this be passed on to Edinburgh Coach Lines as they and not Lothian Buses will now be performing this service?

Oh No It Isn't

But any money saved has already found another home, and it's not exactly a new one. Good news too, for further Lothian Bus routes, as Edinburgh Council has granted a temporary reprieve for the 13, 18, N16, N26 and N44, based on a £124,000 rescue deal. Prompting the question: what difference exactly have Edinburgh Council's economies made (threatened about a month ago)?
