EICA Climbing on Up

Ratho’s Edinburgh International Climbing Arena (EICA) is bidding to host the 2013 International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Championships, currently being held in China.

The EICA also hopes to hold a leg of the 2011 Climbing World Cup. Edinburgh Leisure, who now run the world-class venue, have boosted chances by ensuring there are now 2 competition walls, with horizontal overhangs.

Growing in maturity? Youth Championships have already hosted the British Youth Championships this year, for the second consecutive year. EICA Manager Graham Gardiner said it was good news that the EICA has ‘been awarded a 2009 European Youth Championship series and the 2010 World Youth Championships [saying that] we see these bids as a natural progression towards the realisation of the world-class vision that Edinburgh Leisure and the city council have for the centre.’

Following a Festival season that arguably saw a reduction in the value of tickets sold, this welcome addition to the Edinburgh economy is well timed. Over 200 competitors will take part in the 2013 event, arriving with friends, family and supporters.
