Edinburgh's Mound is home to a a very different sort of activity and artform...
Like to know more about martial arts than saying 'wax on, wax off' from the Karate Kid? You too could practise among the cherry blossom in the Meadows. Edinburgh has a buzzing martial arts scene, from fencing to jitsu - there's bound to be something that inspires you.
Fencing: on Wednesdays if you're passing the Kirk o' Field you might actually see people who own swords. If thta's not enough excitement for you, you can join the Edinburgh beginners' group, which starts at 1830. Come along and sharpen up your broadsword action!
Tae Kwon Do: one of the best translations is 'the art of kicking and punching'. Focuses on the legs as the longest and strongest muscles we have. Located opposite Edinburgh's Tollcross Fire Station and with 2 classes every day apart from the weekends, when there is one class a day
Kendo: the website proudly boasts that the concept of kendo is to 'discipline the human character through the applications of the katana'. There's a generous amount of observation involved and beginners' classes take around 2 hours. Classes are held at Mary Erskine School, Craigleith Rise, Edinburgh, EH4 3NT on Tuesdays and Fridays
Jitsu: for the uninitiated, jitsu is a martial art that uses the aggressor's force against them. So whether it's joggers in Edinburgh's Meadows or bouncers in Edinburgh's pubic triangle, you'll be able to respond with strikes, joint locks and throws. The core values seem to be taking responsibility for your actions, compassion for your attacker and using your whole mind and body.
