Edinburgh Wedding Dress Shopping

There are stories of wedding dress shops charging for appointments, as girls cheer themselves up by trying on dresses before they even find a groom. Thankfully Edinburgh hasn't started doing this yet.

Review and Recommendations

The East End of Princes Street is a good place to start. It's news to starter brides (no pun intended) but you'll have to book an appointment of about an hour to be permitted to try on dresses. You may be told that appointments book up 3 Saturdays in advance but it's worth calling closer to the date you fancy going to check for gaps.

Eleganza Sposa (Waterloo Place) has a great range, though they're certainly not cheap. The layout of the shop is fairly relaxing and for more important customers there seemed to be a desk where your consultation takes place, together with some champagne. Less wealthy customers are simply invited to try on the dresses. The assistant was very helpful and suggested appropriate accessories to accentuate the dress's attributes.

Across the road is Caroline Castigliano. Stunning dresses but you may well need a second mortgage for these. Or maybe rob a bank. But that's for wedding no. 2, when you've sorted out how to do a wedding properly!

Berketex Bride on Frederick Street was the next calling place. This was less useful. To pop in for a second peek at one of the dresses in the running seemed less than welcome, with the sales assistant being frankly fairly rude. The initial consultation was great but a little more guidance when trying on the dresses would have been helpful. Often has a sale rail and how now shifted location to just north of George Street

Butterflies, London Road - a little off the beaten track. Busy and business-like, this shop has a lot of dresses. You'd be well-advised to have looked at other shops before coming here. It was difficult on both visits to attract the attention of a sales assistant. The dresses here are more reasonably priced than at previous shops though the service is fairly workmanlike.
