The layout of the venue is intriguing therefore – with an upper and lower level viewing area, but retaining a fairly intimate atmosphere.
The crowd was disappointingly quiet, and the support act largely unimpressive. The trumpet playing by one half of this duo was the best part to be honest.
She put on a much more interesting and varied show than expected. She looked great, kitted out in a tartan corset and the electric songs were brilliant - totally matching her on-stage presence and style. Some dull songs from the second album featured, but so much more back list than might have been predicted.
When her mum Kate McGarrigle came on the effect was pretty intense, MW was like a singer possessed and intense - she really showed off her talent. Her songwriting will be a hit with you if you like the darker side of life - so cynical - and this came across in her banter. She was pretty captivating, and up there among top female artists like PJ Harvey for raw energy.
'Ball and Chain' was a clear highlight - this was the first electric song she played when she stripped off her jacket to wear just the corset. The lyrics to this song are very appropriate to this costume change.
Newer stuff actually sounded ok. A song like 'the george song' which her brother Rufus sings backing vocals on the album, was lacking his vocals live - but other songs e.g. jimi were much better live.
