Raise a Glass to Princes Street

What do you think about a new hotel on Princes Street? Edinburgh’s councillors and planners are exploring the possibility of a new glass-encased hotel development. The Georgian building looks set to be encased in glass, according to designs unveiled this week, thanks to a £40 million investment.

Well some glass buildings are ok...

The proposed location is 121-123 Princes Street. Guests’ views would include Edinburgh Castle. The hotel, a 103-bedroom mammoth, with shopping on the lower levels, would include a bar and restaurant. The site is currently home to several souvenir shops, with the upper levels lying vacant.

You can see the planning application here. Because the application is only at a very early stage, it’s not possible yet to add your comments.

Someone seems to think Edinburgh needs more hotels. The Princes Street move follows swiftly on from a £300 million Caltongate scheme. This is despite Edinburgh hotel occupancy being lower in August 2008 compared to 2007.

Any thoughts? Is there a good reason why Edinburgh's Princes Street hasn't had another hotel added in the last 5 decades - we don't need one? Or would this add to Princes Street's string of pearls appeal?
