Return via reverse of routes (except 45 off-peak buses which run via Waverley Bridge then Sth St. David Street and George Street).

yep, another example of Edinburgh 'wait and see' planning. Buses gridlocked this week on George Street and the Mound - half an hour to cross Princes Street.
One bus even turned around on the Mound I heard, getting all its passengers to transfer to the bus behind, so it could stay on schedule, albeit heading in the opposite direction! Not sure this story makes sense as buses are quite large but I'm sure there's truth in it somewhere...
