Wheely Good Fun

With Chris Hoy, triple-gold medallist back in Edinburgh today, it seems a good time to write the lowdown on cycling in Edinburgh. Should any hardy souls want to get into civilian ie. non-competitive cycling, here are a few ideas...

Make sure your bike reflects your personality...

OK, so first take one bike:

Although enthusiasts rave about their bikes which cost thousands of pounds and can be very sensitive, you can get away with a road (skinny tyres) or equally a mountain bike (more chunky tyres) around town.

If you’re wanting to save money, you could try the Saturday second-hand bike sales at the Bike Station, at 250 Causewayside. The lovely folks there can even teach you how to care for your new friend. Adult bikes typically go for £55 and can be bought between 1030 and 1630 on Saturdays only.

Make some new friends:

Become traffic. The last Friday of each month means Edinburgh cyclists meet up at the bottom of The Mound (by the galleries on Princes Street). They then take over the road and cycle around the capital. There is no leader and no set route, as riders just ride wherever the crowd decides. Are you bold enough to be Edinburgh’s critical mass?

Want a cycle ride that’s a wee bit more, well, organised? You could opt into more gentle rides with the Try Cycling in Edinburgh outings. Typically around 8 miles in length, with planned toilet and food breaks, you’ll find these trips fairly simple – just turn up and enjoy!

Any other cycling tips?
