Turning 21 in 2009, the Edinburgh International Science Festival’s attendance figures are certainly maturing nicely. Over 50,000 visitors in 2008 enjoyed workshops, talks and exhibitions in 14 venues across the city. ‘Lightbulb moments’ occurred in locations such as the McEwan Hall, Our Dynamic Earth, the Royal College of Physicians or even St Giles Cathedral.

But why? Kids are always asking questions – so why not bring the little question-makers to somewhere they can get some of these conundrums answered. Previous interactive experiments have included taking photos with only a cardboard box and determining if your genes have secrets to tell you – for example do you have secret red hair in your gene pool?

School’s out. The Edinburgh International Science Festival gets kids to learn in the most natural way possible. By doing and seeing. Face-to-face encounters in shows, presentations and workshops can make finding out about science both inspiring and confidence building.
