Where do musicians go on holiday? Edinburgh. Just as the name suggests, the Edinburgh International Festival invites performers from around the globe. Unlike the Fringe, it’s a select group who receive an invitation, from the Festival director themself. Like many other events, from high culture to whisky and sports, the EIF 2009 is part of the Homecoming Scotland 2009 events programme.

• Artists from Easterm Europe, including Bosnia, Lebanon, Turkey and Iran
• World Premiere from the National Theatre of Scotland about the life chances of children in care in Scotland
• Istanbul Music and Sema Group, performing the world-famous whirling dervishes dancing
