Scots were banned by the English from bearing or training with arms (war implements) - for fear that they might revolt against the English. The Scots’ canny response was to develop the Highland Games. This way they could continue to train for war.
Highland Games Events
Caber toss
The most iconic of all the Highland Games events. Here’s how it works: a long tapered pine log is held by the competitor (by the smallest end) and tossed so that the caber turns end over end. This means that the larger end hits the floor first and the other end flies up in a 12 o’clock position. If competitors are successful in this, they are said to have ‘turned the caber’.
