Home of Whisky

Scotch whisky is usually distilled twice and is referred to as the ‘water of life’ (‘uisge beatha’ in Scottish Gaelic). The water that the whisky is made with greatly influences the end product. The whisky produced can have a wide range of tastes, from peaty to positively sweet. Scotland as the home of Scotch Whisky is one of the key themes of Homecoming Scotland 2009. Find out more about Homecoming Scotland 2009, taking place 25 January-30 November 2009.

Researching whisky is just one great reason to visit Scotland and Edinburgh in 2009. But it is a very popular souvenir to take home when you do leave us. There is a wide variety of whiskies available, from Speyside to Islands. So your travels could take you on a distinctly whisky-flavoured pilgrimage, to find your perfect malt. Good luck!

Presents for Folks back Home

Quaiches, a drinking vessel are a traditional present for graduation and 21st birthdays, as are kilts. Kilts are a much more expensive option. Kilts are given at this time because by the 21st birthday boys have stopped growing.

Whisky-drinking: how to look like an expert

  • You can buy cheaper blend whisky or more expensive malt whisky. You may notice one difference between the two is that malt whisky is often drunk straight, or with just water or ice. Blend whiskies are more commonly drunk with mixers like cola.
  • Lastly, don’t be frightened of adding more water: add enough until your nose can’t smell the alcohol is one good rule of thumb!
