Tartan

Why do we wear tartan?

Warm and cosy, tartan is not just for grannies’ shopping trolleys and caber-tossing athletes in the Highland Games. Rugby matches, reunions, weddings and Hogmanay are all excellent occasions to sport your colours. For events in the Homecoming Scotland 2009’s Edinburgh Clan Gathering 2009 and other events, see our Homecoming Scotland 2009 calendar.

Is tartan solely Scottish in origin?

No. In fact the more tartanry research you do, you might start to wonder if tartan is really Scottish at all.

Did you know?

  • The world’s first colour photograph was of a tartan ribbon, and was taken in 1861 by James Clerk Maxwell
  • Over 30 million people of Scots descent celebrate their heritage, some as part of Tartan Day (6 April, on the anniversary of the Arbroath Declaration in 1320)
  • Tartan is traditionally a 21st birthday present. This might give some indication of how expensive a full kit and associated items might be. It does vary, but you should remember it takes 8 yards of woollen fabric for the kilt, plus brogues and socks, plus skean-dhu, and Prince Charlie jacket to complete the outfit. So it can cost £2000(GBP) for your whole outfit.
  • Who can wear a tartan?

Tartan is a way of indicating with clan (roughly speaking, what tribe) you belong to. But this has only been the case since the mid-19th century. Special events, all Canadian provinces, military forces and even religious groups have their own tartan.
