Area Information and Top Tips

The Royal Mile is a fantastically historic but lively place to have as your base when you stay in Edinburgh. The Mound, that leads you down from the Royal Mile to Princes Street was formed from the waste when Princes Street Gardens was transformed from Nor Loch in the 18th century.

Princes Street Gardens are a nearby and attractive place to picnic in the summer. In winter they become a Winter Wonderland with ice skating and German market with mulled wine. There are fairground rides and a ferris wheel.

The Royal Mile is part of Edinburgh's 'Old Town'. This means it was lived in previous to the 18th century development of the area just northwards (including Princes Street) which is known as the New Town.
