Area Information and Top Tips
The Royal Mile is within a part of Edinburgh called the Old Town. Specifically, the Royal Mile is a geological feature called a tail which leads from a crag, in this case, Edinburgh Castle. Together the crag and tail are one version of an extinct volcano formation.
From geology to literature. If you are interested in the cultural history of Edinburgh, the Royal Mile has a lot to offer. Robert Louis Stevenson was inspired to write Jekyll and Hyde, a famous novel, by one of Edinburgh's residents, Deacon Brodie. You can take literary walking tours down this street and their is a writers museum to visit.
Eating out and going for a drink is easy - choosing one of the many establishments might be more tricky! George IV Bridge has some trendy bars and restaurants, while the Royal Mile has a great choice of cafes and traditional Scottish pubs.
