Traditions in their own right, the Princes Street Party, complete with live music and entertainment and The Hoog, hosted at the Assembly Rooms and the Queens Halls are well worth a trip to Edinburgh. You must choose between these two events and dancing at the the Ceilidh in the Gardens and Concert in the Gardens – a tough decision to make.

Hogmanay Night Afore, on the 30 December is nearly a festival in its own right, with music, storytelling and a monster ceilidh! Thrill as you march up Calton Hill in the Torchlit Procession and witness a real Viking long-ship burning! Then on New Year’s Day itself, if you’re up early enough, at 1300 you can take part in the Hogmanay One o’clock Run.

New Year’s Day, hopefully chilly and bright, also means its time for Edinburgh’s Dogmanay in Holyrood Park, the Iron Kids Duathlon, and Loony Dook where you’ll splash in the chilly Forth plus the Edinburgh Bicycle Triathlon for anyone who finds just one event a bit of a let-down!
