Edinburgh Hogmany 2008: Loony Dook

1 January 2009, 1100-1300

Dook is a Scots term for dip, in case you were wondering. And yes, since you asked, it does seem to be a particularly loony bunch of folks that decide to go for a wee ‘dook’ in the River Forth. But it’s all in a good cause, as this is the annual Forth Radio 'Help a Child Appeal' fundraiser, and 2009 will be its 23rd year.

The event starts with a parade through Queensferry’s streets, led by magnificent pipers. So if you’ve actually got to bed the previous night - and not just stayed awake until this swim, the cold waters will surely make sure you’re wide awake!

Our 250 comfortable Edinburgh serviced apartments can offer you a slightly less shocking way to start the day. Perhaps a breakfast pack and city bus tour is more your kind of action?

Bacon roll more your style come New Year’s Day? If all that noise and thought of sea-bathing in January in Scotland seems, well, a bit pagan, that’s fine. Under the shadow of the world-famous Forth Rail Bridge, one of the wonders of the modern world is a grand place to spectate from. And maybe even take bets on who of your friends will stay in longest?
