Edinburgh Hogmanay 2008: The Hoog

31 December 2008: 1930-0200

Hoog has 2 meanings: ‘big love day’ in Scandinavian, from ‘hoog min dag’; and a very special Edinburgh Hogmanay celebration. In recent years The Hoog has become so popular so that now it consists of 2 events: The Hoog and Hoog Royale.

The Assembly Rooms on George Street (for The Hoog) and Queens Hall on South Clerk Street (for The Hoog Royale) are the 2 Hoog options you can choose. Ceilidhs will be held at both, but with jazz at the Hoog Royale – instead of 3 live music stages at the Hoog, there’s a slight difference in tone. There's a huge range of Hogmanay events for you to ponder over.

Away from the 80,000-strong Princes Street Hogmanay Street Party, both events give you a behind-the-scenes Edinburgh Hogmanay. The Hoog offers elegant Georgian surroundings, like some Edinburgh corporate apartments, while The Hoog Royale gives you a more intimate acoustic music venue and is a little further out. See our guide to Edinburgh Locations to get your bearings.

Flexible and comfortable, your Edinburgh Hogmanay accommodation should get you into the mood – maybe have a wee dram before you head out. Both Hoogs will sell food and drink, but maybe you’d like to book a restaurant or meet up with friends for drinks before you head out for your New Year’s Eve celebrations?
