29 December: 1800-2100, Torchlit Procession and Viking Long-Ship Burning
Firestarters wanted!
Buy a wax-based torch for £4 and join a 20,000-strong procession to march along from Edinburgh’s Parliament Square – near St Giles Cathedral, along Princes Street and finish on Calton Hill. This is the ultimate pre-Edinburgh Hogmanay build-up.
With nearly 20,000 others, follow a group of around 30 Lerwick Up Helly Aa Vikings from Shetland and The Clann, a Viking historical fight display team. Calton Hill is the perfect setting for the finalé – the ceremonial burning of both a Viking long-ship and a symbol designed to represent our links to the outgoing year. A wicker and willow stag was Scotland’s 2007 symbolic offering, based on us leaving behind the Highland Year of Culture.
If you plan your Hogmanay celebrations well in advance, you can purchase torches before the event for £4; or £5 on the night if there are any left!
Hogmanay accommodation will be snapped up fast too. New Town, Charlotte Square, Newhaven Harbour and City Centre would be perfect locations, then all you need to decide is who you share your serviced apartment with and where to go for post-bonfire drinks - maybe at Amicus Apple!
