30 December: 2000-0000, Night Afore Monster Ceilidh
This evening does exactly what it says on the tin – it's the night before New Year’s Eve. George Street hosts this annual ceilidh, where you can exhaust yourself like nowhere else, by Stripping the Willow all the way down this famous street! 2100 is when this marathon danceathon kicks off!
Strip the Willow is a well-known Scottish dance, where partners face each other and stand side-to-side with other dancers in a long row – they will swing each person in the opposite row and then alternately swing their partner with the other arm. If this sounds too energetic for you, maybe another Edinburgh Hogmanay 2009 event will be more to your liking.
Music – traditional and contemporary, dancing demonstrations and street theatre make an appearance from 8pm onwards. Hogmanay 2007 saw storytelling and line dancing as examples of Scottish culture’s effect on the rest of the world. For those of us who see golf as Scotland’s real empire, this was an eye-opening experience!
Shattered from your ceilidh-dancing, happy at meeting so many friendly fellow Hogmanayers, and perhaps with a wee dram inside you, you will be looking for your Edinburgh serviced apartment to deliver comfortable sleeping and a personal environment. City centre, New Town or West End apartments like Charlotte Square and Canning Street Mews will all make ideal bases to get ready in and enjoy your short break in Edinburgh!
