Edinburgh City Chambers is located on the High Street section of the Edinburgh Royal Mile. This is the home of Edinburgh City Council. The building’s primary purpose was as a forum for Edinburgh merchants, which would also include a library and council halls and it was built 1753-61.
From the Royal Mile you will see a grand arched colonnade and courtyard - and set a little further back is the main edifice. The building’s location on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile is easily spotted via the statue of Alexander the Great training his horse, Bucephalus (by Sir John Steell) which stands outside. However impressive the Edinburgh City Chambers appears, then as now, the Edinburgh traders preferred the Edinburgh taverns to a Royal Exchange for conducting their business.
The previous occupant of this site was the Provost of Edinburgh, as this was where his mansion was situated. Edinburgh City Chambers was built on top of an existing street, Mary King’s Close, which now is the basement of the property and a tourist attraction in its own right.
Accommodation Edinburgh-style
Many Edinburgh properties share the high-rise properties of the Cockburn Street (north) side of the Edinburgh City Chambers. This building demonstrates how the Royal Mile slopes down towards the New Town; it has 3 storeys on its High Street (Royal Mile) façade but 12 storeys on its Cockburn Street façade.
