Congratulations Fringe, you can now collect your bus pass. In 2008 we celebrate the 61st Edinburgh Fringe Festival, but this annual arts outing began as a complete accident. Uninvited and thus excluded from the first Edinburgh International Festival in 1947, eight theatre groups began what we know now as the Fringe.
It was 1958 when the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society established itself properly. Brochures, information and tickets were centralised – though prior to this, Edinburgh University students had already set up accommodation for Fringe performers, a café and ticket-selling operations in previous years.
Drawing up of a constitution cemented the institution. Prior to 1958, the entire organisational task fell to keen volunteers, meeting in each other’s Edinburgh apartments. But the combination of these two aspects – commitment and independence is what makes the Fringe so very special. The founders agreed that there was to be no vetting of performances. Democracy has the final say in a show's success: with audiences voting with their feet and recommending shows to others.
