Museum of Childhood

Calling all worn-out skateboards and care bears! Edinburgh’s Museum of Childhood doesn’t actually advertise for donations, but it doesn’t stop people asking. This is the first childhood museum in the UK (there are now only three others).

The museum runs to 3 floors, and began in 1955 when a local councillor was appalled that two of Queen Victoria’s dolls were rehomed in London as there was nowhere in Scotland to display them. Councillor Murray even began the collection with his own childhood toys, an indication of how seriously he took this cause.

The museum does have a distinctly UK flavour but has displayed ancient dolls from Peru and Egypt in the past. You will find a wide range of exhibits - from rocking horses to social history and education information and fancy dress costume to Robertson marmalade badges of the 1980s.

If you’re visiting Edinburgh with your family, this could be a great (and FREE) Edinburgh visitor attraction to include in your trip.

Located on High Street, part of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. Described as the noisiest museum in the world. If these two descriptions don’t help you, why not try:

How to find the Edinburgh Museum of Childhood: instantly recognisable brass plate with children’s silhouettes depicted. Directly opposite John Knox’s House, also on the Royal Mile.
