Scotland can always offer you something a wee bit different, even if it’s just an interesting perspective. And even the famous Royal Mile is no exception. In English measurements, it is more than a mile. It is 1.1 of an English mile. And this is because the Royal Mile was the standard unit for Scottish miles, as you might reasonably expect. But in 1824 the English mile was imposed on Scotland by an Act of Parliament.
Linking Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyrood House, the Royal Mile is as fascinating for its geology as for its architecture. And perhaps surprisingly, the two are inescapably intertwined. The Royal Mile is built on what is known as a crag (part of a crag and tail volcano formation). Edinburgh Castle Rock, in common with Stirling Castle’s base and Arthurs’ Seat, are extinct volcanos that we think we have tamed.
This means that land falls steeply away on either side of the Royal Mile. As the medieval period wore on and Edinburgh grew, the only way to fit the exploding Edinburgh population into the same space was to look upwards. The Royal Mile and Grassmarket (another part of Edinburgh’s Old Town) therefore have buildings that run to as many as eight floors. As your city tour guide about garde lou!
