HRS 'Excellence Through People' Finalist

Last week it was determined that the Edinburgh serviced apartment market is growing more aggressively than any other city in the UK. The city’s leading provider’s secret was revealed when they became Finalists in the Hotel Reservation Service (HRS) Excellence Through People Award.

Scottishapartment.com beat the thousands of well-established hotels in the run-up to the HRS Excellence Through People Award and finished in the top three. The HRS Excellence Awards celebrate hotels that have successfully introduced innovative ideas and as a result achieved an outstanding and measurable improvement to their hotel’s business. Scottishapartment.com was the only serviced apartment provider to make it to the final of these prestigious awards.

Their case study beat strong competition from the hotel and hospitality industry but the judges were bowled over with the company’s eager sense of equality and ethos of every staff member treating the company as their own. Not only does every person get the chance to put their entrepreneurial ideas forward but they are truly put to the test when winning ideas are put into working practice.

The Managing Director of Scottishapartment.com, Dave Mackman says, “We have worked hard to hire a dynamic, highly motivated team of staff and it is essential to use that in order for the company to grow and for the team to stay motivated.” It appears that the team enjoy the practice of treating the company as their own – with a staff turnover of nearly zero.

Staff are actively encouraged to report their winning, cost-saving or profit-making ideas into a ballot called Believe and Succeed. Then on a monthly basis, the management team select the winning idea to receive the much sought after £100 prize. Marc Myburgh created the winning entry for October, “I had thought about introducing a booking fee for a while. I then entered it into the ballot and before long it was introduced and earning us extra money per booking. Winning that extra £100 that month was great too but it was more about seeing my idea move into practice for me!”

One staff member who religiously enters all of his ideas into the ballot, has not won anything yet but says, “It really helps me to think that I can make a real difference to the company and the way it works. In so many other jobs you are treated as a number, but at Scottishapartment.com you are treated as though you matter.”
