Rugby will come home to Scotland in May 2008: to Edinburgh’s Murrayfield, where the International Rugby Sevens world series 2007/8 concludes. Dubai was the first tournament of this season, back in November 2007. The Scotland Seven team, as this tournament is also known, has rather large scottie dog as its mascot. Perhaps we might see this overgrown greyfriar’s bobby as a substitute - if fetching a ball is what’s required.

Scotland’s captain, Scott Forrest, is an experienced hand and has led his team into the semi-final of the last consecutive 9 tournaments they have played. Hopes are high for Scotland’s performance in this summer 2008 finale.

How does Sevens differ from standard rugby union?

It’s a lot faster for one thing, with matches lasting only 15 minutes. The other main change is that each rugby sevens team, perhaps obviously, has only 7 players. Penalties have to be taken within 40 seconds of the try being scored and sin binned players stay off the pitch for 2 minutes. But crucially, the rugby pitch used is the same.
