Martha Wainwright (22/10/08, Edinburgh Picturehouse) - review

Based between a betting shop and a hearing assistance shop, the Picturehouse is filled with wood and richness. It has retained the feel of a cinema and the acoustics are great. The layout of the venue is intriguing therefore – with an upper and lower level viewing area, but retaining a fairly intimate atmosphere.

The crowd was disappointingly quiet, and the support act largely unimpressive. The trumpet playing by one half of this duo was the best part to be honest.

Review: Fleeto, St Bride's Centre, Edinburgh

  • gang made up of local drama group participants
  • 4 professional actors
  • sparse props and deliberately low key lighting effects

all make the acting and ideas behind this production stand out starkly. Almost as sharp as the blade used to such effect in the play.

The Brigitte Beraha Trio: Jazz Bar, Chambers Street; 9 October 2015

London-based singer mingles jazz, world and Latin-influenced tunes. Jazz Services Ltd and Arts Council England-suppported gig. Funky accompaniment by trumpet/fluegelhorn and piano. Great revues of her work from The Herald, Humphrey Lyttelton and The Guardian make this one cool act to catch while it's in town!

Not a good look for speed dating. True, it would make you move onto the next candidate quickly...

As every alcoholic knows, there are 2 key elements to every pub outing: outfit and location. Well yes it might be only about the drink. But if you're only at the stage where you like a few drinks you can pretend to yourself that these are your priorities.

Credit Crunch Hits Edinburgh Hogmanay

Christmas and Hogmanay start earlier every year! You can get your Edinburgh Hogmanay tickets from Friday this week (October 3) - but there's been a wee change. The price of the tickets has doubled from £5 to £10 for 2008.

Opinions are split. Is this a cunning marketing ruse to make the event seem more desirable and mark it out from other similar events in Dundee, Stirling, Glasgow and Aberdeen?
